Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Röhl is pleased with the defensive improvements of his team but knows they need to make the ‘final step.’ The Owls played a relatively flat game against Swansea City on Tuesday night, ending in a 0-0 draw at Hillsborough. While some will focus on the lack of goals, their defensive display has shown improvement, especially in defending set pieces.
Wednesday have kept two clean sheets in their last four games, contrasting with earlier in the season when their defense was less solid. Röhl is happy to see progress and believes they are doing the basics right.
Speaking to The Star, he said, “We are very compact, we work with each other, we are connected and work hard. The focus and the mindset to defend is right. We have clean sheets and they are good steps.”
With two defensive midfielders working hard, the team is pressing better. They had a big chance with Jamal and discussed during halftime the importance of covering, closing the net, and creating opportunities. Röhl mentioned that while they are doing well, they still need to take the ‘final step.’
The Owls face another challenge tomorrow night at Fratton Park, aiming for a clean sheet and three points.
