A pundit cautions IpswichTown  about transfer interest in a 10-goal EFL attacker, saying, “Should they get relegated”

Former England international and pundit Carlton Palmer has questioned if Kwame Poku of Peterborough United is prepared to move up to the Premier League, with Ipswich Town allegedly among the teams interested in signing him.

After a spectacular start to the 2024–25 League One season with Peterborough, the 23-year-old is quickly becoming one of the EFL’s most sought-after properties.

Despite Posh’s inconsistent start to the season—they have won six of their first 15 games and lost the same number—Poku has improved his performances after making an impression the previous time out.

As this article is being written, Poku, who scored a hat-trick in Saturday afternoon’s 6-1 thumping of Cambridge United, leads the division in goals scored with 10 goals, five assists, and two consecutive League One Player of the Month titles.

The transfer interest of Ipswich Town in Kwame Poku of Peterborough United
The fact that the vultures are vying for Poku, whose contract expires at the end of the season, is not surprising. Peterborough made a “club-record” contract offer to Poku, who Posh chairman Darragh MacAnthony believes would be a “£30 million player.” However, it now seems certain that the winger will leave London Road at the end of his contract.

Given his age and the fact that he already has plenty of admirers, many of whom are probably keeping a close eye on his contractual status with genuine intent, Peterborough will be entitled to compensation should Poku go as a free agent.

According to a recent report by TBR Football, Burnley, Millwall, Southampton, and Rangers are among the teams now interested in signing Poku. Ipswich Town is also reportedly in the running.

Under forward-thinking head coach Kieran McKenna, who has demonstrated himself to be a wise talent development, the Tractor Boys are no strangers to bringing in young, up-and-coming players.

Rob Edwards of Luton Town may be considering the “what if” of a 10-goal EFL winger following a summer pursuit.
Rob Edwards could be wondering how Luton Town’s 24–25 season might be going if he had recruited Kwame Poku from Peterborough United.

It’s unclear how much of an influence that will have on Poku’s final choice, although it would be intriguing to watch how he progresses at Portman Road.

Carlton Palmer’s response to the announcement of Kwame Poku’s transfer from Peteborough United to Ipswich Town
Palmer is wary of Poku’s chances of making the quick transition from League One to the Premier League, despite the fact that the forward is clearly an exciting talent.

Poku has only played one season above the third division and would be joining a team that is already fairly well-stocked in wide areas, where the former Colchester United starlet is most comfortable. McKenna currently has right-sided options like Omari Hutchinson, Chiedozie Ogbene, and Wes Burns at his disposal.

In light of this, Palmer believes that Poku would be a better investment for Ipswich should they be demoted back to the Championship at the end of the current campaign.

Palmer exclusively informed Football League World, “Ipswich Town is another club weighing a move for Peterborough United’s star Kwame Poku.”

“Ipswich’s is an intriguing one. I think it will be all on this season, and I’m a huge fan of their boss.

Kieran McKenna, Town of Ipswich
“He is an excellent coach. Ipswich has appeared in every Premier League game I’ve watched, and I know Leicester is performing well and has 10 points out of all the clubs who have been promoted.

It’s going to be extremely close, so they might make a big effort to remain up. Both Crystal Palace and Wolverhampton Wanderers should escape their current predicament, in my opinion.

“Is Poku capable of playing in the Premier League? I don’t know for sure. He can go from League One to the Championship, in my opinion.

“These clubs are considering his contract status because he is a good young player.

His contract expires next summer, so his charge won’t be as high. Of course, you’ll have a look at it if you can get a player of his caliber for a ridiculously low price.

“I believe that Poku’s circumstances makes it obvious that he will be available for a reduced fee. The likes of Southampton and Ipswich might have a very talented player on their books if they get demoted.
