Birmingham City’s Alfie May made the move to the League One club from Charlton Athletic this summer after initially being close to joining Huddersfield Town. However, since his departure from Charlton, May has faced abuse and has now spoken to the media ahead of his return to face his former club this weekend.
The former Cheltenham Town striker hinted that the full story behind his exit from Charlton has yet to be revealed. It has been suggested that Charlton’s manager, Nathan Jones, decided to sell May in the summer, despite the forward winning the golden boot last season, as part of a shift in approach.
Huddersfield Town were reportedly close to signing May, but Birmingham City secured the deal in the final stages. The 31-year-old also mentioned that his desire to live closer to his family in Doncaster played a key role in his decision to move, though he suggested that more details about the situation will eventually be made public.
When asked about Charlton, May said: “They’re a massive club, an ex-Premier League club. They have a very good coach, but their results in the league aren’t showing that at the moment. It’s hard to talk about Charlton, to be honest. I was only there for a year, and some of the abuse I’ve received since leaving… they don’t know half of the story.”
May added that despite enjoying his time at Charlton and receiving support from the players and fans, there is some frustration about how things ended. He noted that while he hopes to score against his former club, he won’t celebrate out of respect.
There also appears to be lingering tensions related to his move to Birmingham City. May alluded to feeling hard done by after his transfer and the subsequent fan reaction. Although Charlton supporters may be upset to see their star player join a rival in the same division, it seems the decision was mutual between all parties. It remains to be seen when or if May will share more details about the move and what the reaction will be when the full story comes out.
