A Sheffield Wednesday first-teamer has been backed to move on in the January transfer window.
In two-and-a-half months, the January transfer window will re-open, and for Sheffield Wednesday it could be another crucial window.
Last season, the Owls’ January business arguably kept them in the Championship, with Danny Rohl signing all of Ike Ugbo, James Beadle, and Ian Poveda on loan. For all in the Championship, whether they’re eyeing promotion or battling relegation, the January window is a crucial refuelling point midway through the season.
But the winter window could also be a chance for the Owls to further trim their first-team squad as Rohl looks to make the team his own. There might be a few players, youngsters in particular, who are primed for loan moves in January. And there might be some lesser-seen players who either push for an exit, or who the Owls look to shed off their wage bill.
One such player might be Callum Paterson.
Paterson, 29, made his first Championship appearance of the season in the 2-1 win against Coventry City last time out, coming off the bench in the final minutes.
The Scot has featured in the Carabao Cup this season. He even scored twice in the 5-1 win against Grimsby Town earlier in the season.
But Rohl hasn’t favoured Paterson in the Championship. It comes after Paterson had transfer interest towards the end of the summer window, with his contract out at the end of this season.
Speaking to Football League World, former Owl and now pundit Carlton Palmer said:
“Obviously Callum wants to play first-team football, for sure, and if he can’t be guaranteed that at Sheffield Wednesday, he will want to move on at some point.”
Palmer continued:
“It’ll be interesting to see what will happen, I don’t think Sheffield Wednesday will look to offload him, but I don’t think they will stand in his way if Callum came to them and asked to move on to play first-team football. He’s been that much of a good pro since he’s come in to Sheffield Wednesday that I don’t believe the club would stand in his way if he decided in January that he needed to move on to play some football. There’d be no shortage of takers for Callum Paterson.”
Having seen how little Paterson has played this season, Rohl may be thinking that the club should’ve offloaded him in the summer. And Paterson may be wishing that he left Hillsborough; he’s a good player with a lot of years ahead of him, but he’s being wasted in S6 right now.
Last season we saw Lee Gregory in a similar position. He could’ve left in January but was kept around, despite barely featuring under Rohl. Wednesday need to avoid a similar situation with Paterson and make sure that, if he gets the chance to, he’s moved on, for the better of the player and the club.
