Paul Warne disclosed Derby County midfielder Kenzo Goudmijn has a slight injury issue and clarified that Ebou Adams’ shift into an advanced position against Oxford United was tactical.
Adams started the first half of last night’s 1-1 draw at Kassam Stadium as a number 10 after Nathaniel Mendez-Laing’s season-opening goal saved a point.
Since Adams has typically been chosen to play in front of the back four because of his persistence, vigor, and aggression, Goudmijn took on a more significant role.
After a lackluster performance against Des Buckingham’s team, Goudmijn was substituted near the hour mark, and Derby head coach Warne finally changed it at halftime. “I am fully to blame, that’s fine – you can put it on me,” Warne remarked when asked why Adams had been chosen to play further forward.
“I successfully placed Ebou there to block Will Vaulks. Will gave us a huge tick because he didn’t get a kick. Ebou, on the other hand, most likely lacks Kenzo’s cunning. However, Will Vaulks would have smashed Kenzo all over if I had put him on him. We had to keep an eye on Kenzo’s little injury, so we couldn’t really count on him to play further up the field.
“At halftime, I switched it. Sometimes it’s not, but it’s always strategies. We were losing because we didn’t do the fundamentals correctly, not because we were being torn apart, in my opinion.
