The New England Patriots may have made their first of several transactions before November 5th, while the Kansas City Chiefs got another veteran before the trade deadline.
Joshua Uche, an edge rusher, was traded from the Patriots to the Chiefs in exchange for a 2026 NFL Draft sixth-round pick. Uche leaves the Patriots after five seasons as a result of the trade, and the Chiefs get depth at a crucial position.
Let’s examine the trade in more detail and assign grades to each team.
Joshua Uche’s trade grade for the Chiefs
Although he might not be a key member of Kansas City’s defense going ahead, Uche could provide support on the fringes. Mike Danna, the starting edge rusher, has been the most prominent member of the Chiefs’ front line to miss time due to injuries. Due to a pectoral injury, Danna has missed the Chiefs’ last two games.
However, Danna was likely one of the Chiefs’ defense’s worse starters thus far this season, even while healthy. In his four games, he only recorded nine pressures and a half-sack. Additionally, his pass rush win percentage this season is a pitiful four percent.
Uche has only recorded two sacks and 13 total tackles in seven games, which isn’t much more than Danna’s output. But according to Pro Football Focus, he has only 96 pass-rush snaps this season and 13 pressures. This season, he also has a pass rush victory percentage of 24%.
Uche has only played 162 total snaps in the first seven games, and there’s a reason for it. As evidenced by players like Anfernee Jennings and others who play along the edge rather than Uche on rundowns, he has never been proficient enough in the run game to be a three-down player. However, Kansas City already has the players in place to rotate Uche in on passing downs because they have the third-best run defense in the league.
For the Chiefs, this is a low-risk move with some potential rewards.
The Patriots’ assessment of the Joshua Uche transaction

The Patriots bid farewell to a guy who had enormous potential for them in the past but was never able to hold onto it for an extended length of time.
After being selected by the Patriots in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft, Uche struggled with injuries and was buried on the depth chart for his first two seasons in the league. However, with 11.5 sacks and 56 pressures in 2022, he became one of the league’s top situational pass rushers.

That success was never repeated by the 26-year-old. He failed to be the pass rusher the Patriots needed after Matthew Judon had a season-ending injury in Week 4 of the previous season, with just three sacks and 37 pressures in 15 games.
It’s difficult not to feel sad that this trade ends the career of a guy who once seemed potential for the Patriots, even though Uche wasn’t as effective as many fans had hoped. Yes, it was improbable that Uche would ever become anything. He signed a one-year contract during the offseason, taking a lower salary to stay in New England, but he was a terrific character guy for the team.
It seemed certain that Uche would depart during the season or in the offseason given the way this one has gone. Therefore, it’s fortunate that they received some payment for him. However, a sixth-round selection in a draft more than a year from now is essentially nothing.
