A.J. Lawson’s non-guaranteed contract with the Dallas Mavericks was dismissed on Tuesday, sparking rumors about what the Mavs would do with their final two-way contract. Given his impressive performance against the Grizzlies on Monday night, Jazian Gortman was a strong candidate to occupy the last spot.

Rather, Lawson, a fourth-year player out of South Carolina, was brought back by the Mavericks as part of their last two-way deal. Lawson has played in 56 games for Dallas, where he scored 17 points against the Spurs in the previous season, a career high. He had a two-way contract with the Mavs going into the previous season, but they signed him to a four-year, non-guaranteed contract after their trade deadline trades created a roster slot that needed to be filled.

If Gortman continues to play as well as he did on Monday night, the Mavericks will have to make a significant choice. Lawson, Kessler Edwards, and Brandon Williams are now signed to two-way contracts, but due to various ailments, neither Edwards nor Williams have yet to play in the preseason. It could be wise to bring back a guard like Gortman given the injury to Dante Exum, who will miss at least three months due to wrist surgery.

After going undrafted in the 2021 NBA Draft, Lawson spent three seasons as a player for the South Carolina Gamecocks before signing a contract with the Atlanta Hawks. He signed a two-way contract with the Minnesota Timberwolves for the 2022–2023 season, although he would not play in any games. In December 2022, Minnesota released him for the second time. After that, he signed a contract with the Mavs, with whom he has remained.
