Fisticuffs and tea cups’ – Coventry City FA Cup legend on working with Big Ron and emotional return to Highfield Road

The following season I came back to Highfield Road for a league game with Sheffield Wednesday on 17 March 1990 and it almost brought a tear to my eye. The crowd gave me a standing ovation. That was how much the Coventry fans thought of me. That was so pleasing. It was a strange day to go back to Highfield Road but not playing for Coventry. We won 4-1 that day.

The response from the Coventry crowd sat with me so well because I knew, no matter how much fans might dislike you sometimes, you still had all these thousands of people who wanted to give me that recognition. They recognised that I put in good service for the club. They recognised that I hadn’t just been there for a year or two; I’d had six good years there and given my all for the club. To be remembered by the fans was enough for me.
