Gary O’Neil Says He’s ‘Disappointed’ with Himself After Wolves Draw 2-2 with Brighton

Wolves manager Gary O’Neil expressed frustration after his side drew 2-2 with Brighton despite a late comeback. After falling behind by two goals, Wolves fought back to secure a valuable point on the road, but the manager was left unsatisfied with the result, as his team still searches for their first win of the season.

Wolves are now among four Premier League teams without a victory, putting pressure on O’Neil and his players. While fans might see the draw as a positive, particularly after Mario Lemina acknowledged the squad’s concern over their winless streak, O’Neil felt let down by his tactical decisions.

In a post-match interview with the BBC, O’Neil reflected on his choice to start with a five-man defense, a tactic that had previously worked against Manchester City. He admitted, “I’m a little bit disappointed with myself… I didn’t think a five would fit very well against Brighton today, but at least we were quick enough to change it at half-time.”

He noted that when Brighton scored their second goal in the 85th minute, he feared facing more difficult questions about the team’s performance. O’Neil emphasized the effort his players put in, saying, “The players have given an awful lot, and if they keep doing that, it cannot continue to go against you.”

While O’Neil enjoys support from the Wolves board and fans, the lack of results weighs heavily in football. Although a draw at Brighton offers a foundation to build on, Wolves urgently need to secure a win soon, as they risk falling into the same struggles faced by teams like Sheffield United and Burnley last season. With almost a third of the season gone, the pressure is mounting for Wolves to start earning points.
