Queens Park Rangers head coach Marti Cifuentes has asked supporters to stick with the team despite their poor start to the 2024/25 season.
Speaking to the club’s media team, the Spaniard sent a message to fans, acknowledging their disappointment with the team’s early performances. Cifuentes and his assistant Xavi Calm signed new contracts in late September, which many hoped would turn QPR’s season around. Unfortunately, the club’s form hasn’t improved since, and they missed a key opportunity to bounce back on Saturday.
QPR faced Portsmouth at home over the weekend, taking the lead through Karamoko Dembele. Considering Portsmouth hadn’t won a league game all season, QPR were expected to win. However, goals from Freddie Potts and Callum Lang handed the hosts another defeat at Loftus Road. This result, coupled with Cardiff City’s big win over Plymouth Argyle, dropped QPR to the bottom of the Championship table.
As of October 22, 2024, QPR sits 24th with just 7 points from 10 games. Coventry City, who QPR face tonight, are also struggling, making this match crucial for both teams. Coventry, led by Mark Robins, are only slightly above QPR in 21st place, and both managers find themselves under pressure to turn things around.
Cifuentes urged fans to back the team, saying: “I know all of us were very disappointed after Portsmouth, but I am sure the supporters understand they can play an important part. They lifted our game so much last season. I am going to ask them for help because I know the team is not playing at the level we want, and the team may be missing confidence.”
He added that he usually expects the team’s performance to lift the crowd, but in this moment, he believes the supporters can make a difference, especially during evening games at Loftußs Rßoad.
Tonight’s match could have significant consequences for both Cifuentes and Robins as they battle to steer their teams away from relegation danger.
