In the shortened 2019–20 season, the 33-year-old scored 14 goals in 26 league games to help the Sky Blues win promotion to the Championship. Charlton fans will be hoping that he can repeat that feat at the conclusion of his first season at The Valley.
Godden played in Coventry’s 2023 run to the Championship play-off final as well as their close loss to Manchester United in the FA Cup semifinal the previous year.
After leaving non-league team Ebbsfleet United in 2016, he has been a consistent goal scorer in the EFL for Stevenage, Peterborough United, and Coventry. He recently stated in an interview with London News Online that he hopes to reach the 200-goal milestone while at Charlton.
“I don’t set targets but while I am here I am close to the 200-goal mark, so that is one thing I do have in my head,” Godden said.
“That’s one thing I said to Alex Mitchell: ‘I want 200 goals this season if I can’. I think I’m in the low 180s at the moment.”
What is Matty Godden’s current Charlton Athletic status?
Godden, Matty
Following the departure of League One Golden Boot winner Alfie May to Birmingham City, Charlton signed Godden, who had scored 32 goals in the Championship for Coventry over the previous four seasons.
The attacker ultimately signed with the team he used to watch at The Valley as a young player, despite reports that Oxford United was also interested in signing him.
Godden suffered an injury that kept him out of the opening day triumph over Wigan Athletic. He then made his debut coming off the bench in Charlton’s thrilling home opener against Leyton Orient.
In his merely second game for the team, he sealed a 2-0 victory over Bolton Wanderers at The Valley with a skillfully executed diving header.
His next goal came in the EFL Trophy match against Cambridge United, where he extended the Addicks’ lead at The Abbey Stadium by turning in Daniel Kanu’s low cross.
Godden came off the bench with Charlton trailing 3-0 at Bristol Rovers, but he turned the game around for the visitors by setting up an assist for Alex Mitchell and scoring a late consolation goal.
His finest moment wearing a Charlton shirt thus far came last weekend against Birmingham, the favorites for promotion, as he spun to convert a long-throw from Josh Edwards in front of the Covered End, ending a run of three straight losses for Nathan Jones’ team and tying them for sixth place in the standings.
Nathan Jones seemed content with the striker he has acquired.
Godden’s goals in the Addicks’ previous two games is encouraging, considering Stevenage is the only team in the top half of League One to have scored fewer goals than Charlton this season.
In addition, Gassan Ahadme, Miles Leaburn, Daniel Kanu, Tyreece Campbell, Chuks Aneke, and Danny Hylton are all forward alternatives for Charlton, and Jones has a variety of options up front as Danny Hylton hasn’t played since signing as a player-coach on a temporary basis.
But given Jones’ remarks in his post-match interview with London News Online following the Birmingham game, it appears as though Godden will likely start again when Stockport County, who are in the top six above Charlton on goal difference, visit The Valley after the international break.
“We brought him (Godden) in – and spent a lot of money on him – and he is quality,” Jones stated.
“That is what he brings. We lost Alfie May, so we had to replace those goals. We believe we have done that with Matty Godden.”
It would probably be reasonable to assume that Godden’s move to Charlton has gone well so far, as he has scored four goals in his ten games across all competitions.
