He is making it difficult” – Manager admits signing from Brighton has complicated matters for him

Billy Gilmour’s move from Brighton and Hove Albion to Napoli was one of the more surprising transfers this summer. According to Antonio Conte’s latest comments, the decision might not be paying off as expected.

Gilmour joined Napoli for €14m at the end of August, following weeks of speculation. The 23-year-old had hoped to find more playing time and career progression in Italy after struggling to settle at Brighton, where he moved from Chelsea in 2022.

However, things haven’t gone smoothly at Napoli either. Gilmour has made only three appearances, totaling 20 minutes of action in Serie A. Despite this, Conte clarified that the issue lies with the system, not the player.

“I pushed to have Billy because he is intelligent, he sees the play immediately, and despite being short, he is strong in tackling and recovering,” Conte said. “He is making it difficult for me to make decisions. He and Lobotka can play together, but Anguissa and McTominay without a playmaker cannot coexist because we would lack playmaking qualities.”
