Ipswich could forget Phillips by unleashing “fantastic” ace out on loan

Not many of Ipswich Town’s players covered themselves in glory last time out in Premier League action, as the Tractor Boys fell to a 4-1 defeat away at West Ham United.

Liam Delap could at least exit the game with some pride, having fired home the early equaliser before Julen Lopetegui’s Hammers eventually ran rampant in the one-sided affair.

Kalvin Phillips had a rough return to his former loan employers, failing to make a positive impact on the match.

## Kalvin Phillips’ start at Ipswich

Phillips, currently on loan from Manchester City, has yet to make a meaningful mark at Ipswich. His performance against West Ham was underwhelming, giving the ball away early, which led to Michail Antonio’s opening goal, and later standing off Jarrod Bowen as he ran through to score in the second half. Phillips was substituted in the 74th minute after a poor showing.

## Ipswich’s injury troubles and midfield struggles

Manager Kieran McKenna is facing challenges in midfield, with Massimo Luongo and Jens Cajuste both sidelined. This lack of depth leaves McKenna considering his options, with Phillips’ struggles adding to the problem.

## A potential solution: Cameron Humphreys

One option McKenna may turn to is recalling Ipswich product Cameron Humphreys, currently on loan at Wycombe Wanderers. At just 20 years old, Humphreys has been gaining valuable experience, and McKenna has kept a close eye on his progress. With Phillips struggling, Humphreys could provide a much-needed boost in midfield.

### Humphreys’ performance at Wycombe

So far, Humphreys has impressed with his all-around play in League One, showcasing an eye for goal and defensive contributions. His numbers at Wycombe show him to be a well-rounded midfielder:

– **Games played**: 7

– **Goals**: 2

– **Assists**: 0

– **Shots per game**: 1.9

– **Touches per game**: 38.3

– **Accurate passes per game**: 18.4 (74%)

– **Total duels won per game**: 5.3

Humphreys’ defensive abilities and attacking contributions could be exactly what Ipswich need in their midfield. In contrast, Phillips lost four of nine duels in the match against West Ham, while Morsy only registered one blocked shot.

The potential return of Humphreys from loan could provide Ipswich with a much-needed solution in the center of the pitch.
