Following Blackburn Rovers’ stunning unbeaten start to the season, which had them riding high in third place heading into Tuesday night’s game at the CBS Arena, John Eustace was quick to remind supporters that the Championship is a marathon rather than a sprint.
The Sky Blues, in comparison, had secured only one meager victory ahead of kick-off while a dismal performance against Swansea and abject display at Leeds had caused growing fear amongst supporters that the wheels were starting to come off Mark Robins’ amazing reign at the club.
But on that night, the form book was completely turned upside down. Led by Jake Bidwell, the home team dominated for the majority of the game and emerged victorious 3-0 thanks to goals from Haji Wright and Brandon Thomas-Asante in the second half.

When asked his thoughts on the match, Eustace—a former captain and graduate of City—said: “A really disappointing night.” I felt that our tempo was a touch off. It’s regrettable that after a strong start and a brief window of opportunity, we didn’t perform at our typical standards.
“This is the Championship match.” It doesn’t stop. After a strong run and a challenging situation, we were unable to complete our pass. We were in some pretty favorable spots, in my opinion, and the last ball simply wasn’t good enough. It was a rough night for us since we weren’t moving quickly enough to get close enough to them either.
“We have to learn from tonight. It’s a 46-game season in the Championship; you have your ups and downs,” he continued. We faced a very strong club that had made significant financial investments in the previous two seasons.
“They have a very good squad, and if we want to compete with these teams every week, we need to realize that these are the levels we need to reach.”
When asked whether he believed Coventry had enough talent to meet preseason expectations and be competitive this year, the 44-year-old said, “Yeah, definitely,” to CoventryLive. In the past several seasons, they’ve gotten off to a terrible start, but they’ve always overcome it. They have a very talented group of players under their very capable manager, as well as an exciting group of players overall.
“I am sure they will be up there because they are a good team with lots of Championship experience and lots of fire power. You could see they made four or five changes today, and the players who came in they have spent millions of pounds on.”
