Luton boss wants to see a ‘hero’s welcome’ for promotion winner when he returns with Cardiff

Horvath will be back at Kenilworth Road this evening
Former Luton goalkeeper Ethan Horvath should be afforded a ‘hero’s welcome’ from Town supporters when he returns to Kenilworth Road this evening according to manager Rob Edwards.

The 29-year-old played 51 times for the Hatters during the 2022-23 campaign after signing on loan from Nottingham Forest under former boss Nathan Jones in the summer of 2022. It was a hugely successful stint in Bedfordshire for the USA international as well, Luton winning promotion to the Premier League courtesy of an unforgettable play-off final penalty shoot-out victory over Coventry City at Wembley.

An expected move to Kenilworth Road didn’t go through the following summer though, as Town boss Rob Edwards opted to bring in Thomas Kaminski and Tim Krul instead for the top flight campaign, meaning Horvath returned to his parent club. However, he then had to kick his heels as after not being included in the Reds’ 25-man Premier League squad, couldn’t manufacture a move away from the City Ground either before the transfer window closed.

The American did represent his country once when starting a 4-0 friendly win over Oman in, before finally negotiating his exit in February of this year, heading to Wales for an undisclosed fee, penning a three-and-a-half year deal. Horvath made 16 appearances for the Bluebirds during the final stages of the season, also playing the second half of the USA’s 2-1 Copa America loss to Panama in June.

Horvath then started the first four games this term, but with Cardiff taking just a point in that time, and the keeper struggling, making a huge error in the 5-0 loss to Burnley, conceding 10 goals in that time, he has lost his place to Jak Alnwick and has been forced to sit on the bench for the past eight matches. Although it means he might not get on to the pitch this evening, Edwards said: “He played a huge role for us in our promotion and everyone should give him a real hero’s welcome when they see him. He was a huge figure for us in what was an amazing year for the football club, so it’ll be nice to see him
