Norwich City Exposes Derby County Weakness, Raising Concerns for Paul Warne’s Side

Derby County suffered their first home defeat of the season in a 3-2 loss to Norwich City under controversial circumstances. The Rams were twice victims of questionable calls by assistant referee Mark Stevens, who appeared to miss the ball leaving the pitch before Norwich’s first and third goals. Despite a late surge, with Corey Blackett-Taylor scoring to give Derby hope, it wasn’t enough to secure a comeback.

Derby also benefited from an incorrect decision, as their second goal stood despite James Collins obstructing Norwich goalkeeper Angus Gunn when Blackett-Taylor’s curling shot went in.

A significant issue in the match was the absence of left-back Callum Elder, who has been vital to Derby’s early season form. With Elder sidelined due to a groin injury, 35-year-old veteran Craig Forsyth had to step in, and his lack of pace was evident. Forsyth, now in his 12th full season at Derby, struggled to provide the same energy and overlapping support as Elder, leaving winger Nathaniel Mendez-Laing without options on several occasions. His limitations were exposed, highlighting concerns for Paul Warne’s side as they navigate Elder’s absence in the coming weeks.
