Derby County were beaten 2-0 by high-flyers Sunderland on Tuesday night, and in doing so, Paul Warne matched an unwanted Championship record.
Following their promotion from League One, Derby’s home and away form has been starkly different. Despite losing 3-2 against Norwich City on Saturday, the Rams have won three of their four matches at Pride Park and kept three clean sheets. However, their 2-0 defeat against Sunderland marked their fourth consecutive Championship loss away from home.
Paul Warne’s men have struggled to replicate their home form away, equaling an unwanted record. Derby’s winless away run matches a 40-year club record. Warne expressed disappointment in his side’s performance, singling out Kenzo Goudmijn as the only player to earn praise despite the loss.
As noted by journalist Dominic Dietrich, this is the first time Derby has suffered four away losses to start a season outside the top flight since the 1983/84 campaign. The next opportunity to end this run is after the international break when Derby faces Millwall, who sit just below them in the table.
Derby’s struggles away from home often stem from their inability to hold up play, with Jerry Yates playing a role that doesn’t suit him. Warne may need to consider using James Collins as the focal point in future away games to address these issues.
