The 21-year-old French international became somewhat of a fan favorite among parts of the Black Cats faithful during his loan spell at the Stadium of Light in the 2022/23 season. He will now be closely watched by Sunderland’s hierarchy as they track his progress.
Edouard Michut’s Impressive Spell at Sunderland
After graduating from the PSG academy, the composed and calm-headed midfielder showed promise from an early age. At 18, he came off the bench in the 69th minute against Lyon to replace former Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera. He recorded his first assist for the club, setting up Thilo Kehrer for a goal.
This was just the beginning, as a few months later, Michut signed for Sunderland in the summer of 2022. After impressing in a few brief substitute appearances, Michut was awarded his first start against Wigan Athletic on December 29. Sunderland triumphed 4-1, with Michut forming a strong partnership with Dan Neil in midfield.
A subsequent injury to captain Corry Evans allowed Michut to earn more regular minutes. He impressed with his ability to evade pressure and initiate attacks. On March 15, 2023, he scored his first goal for the club in a 2-1 home defeat to Sheffield United. Positioned cleverly by Abdoullah Ba, Michut finished with a low right-footed shot past Blades goalkeeper Wes Foderingham.
Sunderland captured attention in the 2022/23 season by finishing sixth, reaching the playoffs in their first season back in the Championship. Michut, who made 24 appearances, showcased his considerable potential.
Edouard Michut Moves to Adana Demirspor and Then Fortuna Sittard
As reported by L’Équipe at the start of the 2023/24 season, Michut had the opportunity to join Sunderland permanently but chose not to. He explained: “The club offered me the chance to stay, but it was my decision not to. We couldn’t agree on certain contractual points, and there were aspects of the style of play that didn’t suit me. In that system, I was only at 50-60% of my best. I need to touch the ball to be effective. I’m grateful to the president for understanding my decision.”
After leaving Sunderland at the end of the 2022/23 season, Michut spent the following year on loan at Turkish Super Lig side Adana Demirspor, before making a permanent move to the club in July 2024. However, due to unpaid wages, he terminated his contract with Adana Demirspor just two weeks after joining and moved to Eredivisie side Fortuna Sittard on November 5.
Though he has yet to play for Fortuna, Sunderland will be closely monitoring his development, especially after the glimpses of his potential that he showed under Tony Mowbray.
Fortuna Sittard’s Current Situation
Fortuna Sittard currently sits seventh in the Eredivisie table, with 17 points from 11 games, having won five matches. They finished 10th last season, just one spot outside of the play-off positions that would have given them the opportunity to qualify for the Europa Conference League second qualifying round.
The club clearly needs additional quality, and at just 21 years old, Michut could be the player to provide it. Calm, composed, and intelligent in his play, he has a bright future ahead. His performances at Fortuna Sittard will likely be closely followed by
Sunderland’s hierarchy.
