After the World Series, the free agency flurry will start. However, minor league players can already begin to opt out. Three players with some presence on the New York Mets roster made the decision to choose free agency on Tuesday.
The two utility players, Pablo Reyes and his eventual successor Eddy Alvarez, who were purchased for cash from the Boston Red Sox, will not remain in the Mets minor league organization. They are joined in their search for a new home by catcher Joe Hudson, a third player.
All of the emergency Mets roster additions are now free agents.
Each of these three guys joined the Mets during a difficult period. At a time when they obviously needed more positional depth, Reyes and Alvarez provided it. Early in the season, when players like Joey Wendle and Zack Short were obviously going to contribute nothing to the club, Reyes arrived. Alvarez was acquired by the Red Sox in September. He was only used by the Mets for speed off the bench and was never eligible for the playoffs.
Reyes would play for the Mets in just one game. He never saw the plate, although he did score a run. In all eleven of his plate appearances, Alvarez went hitless. He had two goals, one of which was particularly noteworthy, against the Toronto Blue Jays.
Reyes’ experience with the Mets was more like Hudson’s. When the team needed some catching depth early in the season, he was added. In Francisco Alvarez’s absence, Omar Narvaez and Tomas Nido were insufficient. In London, Hudson was part of the cab squad. But the game he would play in was the Mets’ 11-1 victory over the Cubs on June 21. Behind the plate, he completed the game.
Seeing any of these three leave is not shocking. Anyone in this scenario ought to make oneself available to other ball clubs. We wish the Mets well and hope that there is never another “Joe Hudson Game” that will plague us in the future, even though they are only six victories away from winning a World Series for their meager contributions.
