Wolves player dubbed ‘absolutely fabulous’ in 2-1 defeat to Man City

Wolves fans were left heartbroken on Sunday as Manchester City secured a last-minute victory at Molineux, with John Stones scoring an injury-time header, making it a 2-1 defeat for the home side. Despite the result, Wolves delivered a strong defensive performance.

Manager Gary O’Neil opted for a back-three formation with wing-backs, a tactic that proved effective for most of the match. Wolves limited City to long-range efforts, and goalkeeper Jose Sa, stepping in for the injured Sam Johnstone, was in excellent form.

There were several positives to take from the match, with Dave Edwards particularly praising Craig Dawson’s handling of Erling Haaland. Edwards also highlighted the performance of midfielder Joao Gomes.

Joao Gomes hasn’t had the best start to the 2024/25 season, but his display against City was a return to form. The Brazilian midfielder, known for his tenacity, was exceptional in a hard-fought game, and Edwards described his performance as “absolutely fabulous.” Playing in a more advanced role, Gomes showcased his ball-winning abilities, making crucial tackles and disrupting City’s play.

According to Sofascore, Gomes made six tackles—the highest in the game—and contested 17 duels, another game-high. His intensity and determination were evident, particularly after a clash with Mateo Kovacic that earned him a questionable yellow card.

Edwards has previously called Gomes one of Wolves’ best ball-winners, and his display against City certainly supported that claim. With a challenging start to the season now behind them, Wolves will be hoping Gomes can maintain this level of performance in the coming fixtures.
