It has previously been reported by TBR Football that Rob Edwards is in the frame to replace Gary O’Neil, should he be sacked by Wolves.
Edwards oversaw Luton Town’s promotion to the Premier League and guided them to 18th place in their single campaign back in the top flight, finishing above most people’s expectations.
Wolves are without a win in their opening 10 league games, putting O’Neil under pressure to deliver results soon.
The Premier League side face Southampton this weekend, just before the international break, which could be a crucial match in determining the manager’s future.
Paul Robinson makes Gary O’Neil prediction
Robinson believes the upcoming international break could present an opportunity for Wolves to make a change in the dugout. He has suggested that next week will be pivotal in deciding O’Neil’s future, and that a loss to Southampton could result in the manager losing his job.
“We’re in that kind of territory, aren’t we?” said Robinson, via Football Insider. “Without a win this far into the season, it’s looking more and more difficult for Wolves. This is a continuation of the way they finished at the end of last season.”
“Any manager who’s gone this long without a decent run of results is unlikely to still be in the job. Owners will panic and press the button because of Premier League safety and security.”
“It’s a huge game for them this weekend against Southampton. He’s under a lot of pressure. They’re rock bottom, without a win, with only a draw to their name. They’re really struggling. In many international breaks, we see managerial changes.”
“The big question for Wolves is whether they give Gary O’Neil three more games after the Southampton match to try and turn things around. Or do they decide that a poor result or performance against Southampton means they change the manager during the international break and give a new coach a shot at three very winnable games?”
“You’ll certainly get answers in the next week.”
Rob Edwards’ Luton Town Stint
Rob Edwards’ Luton Town record (all competitions, according to Transfermarkt):
Games: 91
Wins: 29
Draws: 24
Losses: 38
Win %: 31.87%
Edwards took charge of Luton following Nathan Jones’ move to Southampton in November 2022. The 41-year-old has earned a lot of praise for his work at Kenilworth Road, even though the club was unable to survive in the Premier League.
He has overseen 91 games in charge of Luton, with his team winning 29 times and losing 38. Luton currently sit 19th in the Championship table, having struggled to find consistent form since returning to the second division.
A Poor Start to the New Season Shouldn’t Overshadow Edwards’ Work at Luton
Edwards has been a great appointment for Luton, and it was inevitable that he would be linked with a Premier League return at some point this season.
While Luton has made a poor start to this year, it shouldn’t overshadow the solid body of work Edwards has built up at Kenilworth Road. The Hatters nearly survived in the Premier League against the odds, achieving some excellent results against teams with far greater resources.
This could be appealing for a team like Wolves, especially given their own struggles
to put together results so far this season.
